In this hurry-up world where craftsmanship and quality often seem like luxuries from another era, the Chatham Sign Shop has built a reputation for creating fine carved gold leaf signs at affordable prices. In our workshop in the heart of downtown Chatham, local artisans start with patterns handed down from the early wood carvers and use the finest materials - 23 karat gold leaf and durable sign enamels - to create signs that stand the tests of time and weather.
Any of the 3D motifs that are applied to our signs can be purchased individually. These are molded in resin from the original carving. Then they are gilded with 23 karat gold leaf, or optionally, they can be left plain, or painted white or silver. Plain motifs will come with a primer coat. Most common is a simple stud that protrudes from the back of the motif that is placed in a predrilled hole and secured with epoxy glue. The second method and simplest is 3M VHB tape that is self-adhered to the back of the motif.
What are the signs made of? A. Our signs are made from a waterproof wood composite that holds the paint, will not absorb water, and will not rot. We also use teak, fir, or mahogany with a stain and varnish finish that will show off the wood grain as well as the gold leaf. We also make economical utlity signs using computer cut vinyl on a pvc substrate.

What a first class company. A friend bought us a house number sign as a gift, but unfortunately ordered the wrong number. I was able to order another and they rushed it me so I could install it and avoid any hurt feelings. Chatham Sign Shop is the only business I will deal with or recommend in the future. Thanks again! This shop is truly outstanding. They are pure artists! All of their work is of the highest quality and most beautiful design. They made us a custom mailbox for our Cape home and they did so exactly as we specified design-wise (which was quite specific). As it turned out, we were unhappy with the first version of the product. The reason for this was the fact that our design vision was flawed.
Once we decided we were unhappy with the design, we talked to them and they were VERY willing to help. They provided excellent design advice and fixed up the mailbox. The result was a gorgeous design. Highly recommend them!

This place has been making carved wooden signs since before my time. Growing up in Mass., we used to go to the cape a lot during summers, and I remember walking by the shop all the time as a kid (there's an ice cream place right across from them) and it seems pretty similar to how it was back then. The sign shop does professional signs for many of the business around town, but they also offer smaller items.
They made a house number sign for me and shipped it. It's beautiful, and very well done. They also included instructions for how to care for it going forward. I'm very happy with my experience with them.
